Nottingham is best known for the myth of Robin Hood and the fame of its hometown writer, D.H. Lawrence (“Lady Chatterley’s Lover”). Mellish Comprehensive is in the inner city and, says Daves, “quite a bit different from Rappahannock, with social and economic problems that don’t exist here.”

As such, the children are “not just writing to a different country, but also to a different life.”
