The Rappahannock community joined with the nation in celebrating mentoiing and the 100th birthday of the Big Brother/ Big Sister Program by participating in Rappahannock’s D.A.R.E. Day event at the county elementary school last Friday.
An annual tradition, Rappahannock’s Starfish Mentoring Program offered face painting at D.A.R.E. Day which was enthusiastically received and served to brighten up everyone’s face.
The week of June 15 has been earmarked as a 100-year birthday celebration of mentoring's first organization, Big Brothers-Big Sisters. This year the U S. Department of Education is offering 195 grants totaling $30 million to programs around the country so that more communities can allow- their children to benefit from mentoring programs.
In 2001, Rappahannock’s grassroots mentoring program was taken under the wing of Headwaters, a local non-profit public education foundation. Through its financial support Starfish has been able to thrive and glow over the last several years into a professional, well organized and effectively managed program.
