Our family arrived in

Rappahannock County

in 1963. Forty-one years ago, before the interstate highways were built, we drove for hours into the country, following our family friend, a Commander Winfield, who was a real estate broker from Fairfax.

We arrived in Castleton to see the sun setting over the Blue Ridge. We thought the bromesedge waving in the fields was beautiful. We thought the four-room house, no phone, no running water, no electricity was wonderful. Being a little more practical, Commander Winfield pointed out that we didn’t know anything about farming.

Well, to shorten the tale, it took him about four months to let us acquire the land. He explained that JT Woodward could, would, and should run cattle on it for us, since we were definitely incapable but we'd have to get rid of the broom sedge.

The lime, fertilizer, and orchard grass seed which was needed to restore the place cost $2,000 and JT and his 80 or So of cattle did the rest. They made it a farm.
