Just as there are permanent human residents of the county, there are permanent birds. Then there are birds that are just passing through in the spring or the fall, and birds that are seen only in the summer or winter.

The kinglets
Kinglets are among the most interesting of these birds, and during the past few weeks, we’ve been noticing a fair number of them.
Kinglets are gnat catchers. There are two species, Ruby-crowned and _ Golden-crowned kinglets, in the genus Regulus, Latin for “little king.” They are indeed tiny — in North America, only certain hummingbirds are smaller.
The Ruby-crowned kinglet has a plainer face, but males have a bright red crown-like patch of feathers that can be raised when agitated — which usually occurs during encounters with other males.
Golden-crowned kinglets have a distinctive eyebrow stripe and a golden crown of feathers in both females and males, the latter of which have an additional erectile patch of orange feathers for displays with other males.
