James A. Bland was a famous “Minstrel Man” and is credited with composing hundreds of songs, among which was Virginia’s former state song, “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny.”
The Rappahannock Lions Club sponsors this program to provide the opportunity for young people to showcase their musical talents by performing in front of friendly audiences, and encouraging our youth to master an individual activity.
This local contest offers cash awards to first, second and third place winners in K -8, both in vocal and instrumental catf ories. Awards are also available for contestants in grades 9 - 12 in the same categories.
