By the 1880's the membership began to dwindle and they decided to build the Washington Baptist in the town of Washington. The biggest problem with the location of Mt. Salem was the fact that the wagon roads crossed the Rush River in 9 places which made church going very difficult during the spring and fall rains.
In 1942 the doors of the church were locked. Except for brief periods of services, special events and restoration the old church is still inactive today although it does have a current Board of Directors.
