students express
themselves for
Youth Art Month

During the month of March, the nation’s youth takes time to celebrate Youth Art Month.
Rappahannock high school art students took advantage of this special month to express themselves in many ways. Joy Sours, the art teacher, arranged several activities that would help spark the students’ creativity and get them excited about Youth Art Month.
There was a trip arranged for the Art II class to Sperryville Pottery. During the trip, students were able to appreciate Suzanne Zylonis’s demonstration of how to work with pottery. She let the students observe her ‘throw” three pieces of pottery and the student’s were able to engage in a question-answer session with the instructor. On an overall basis, Sours said, “I think it went well and the trip was inspiring for the students.”
As a part of Youth Art Month, many contests were arranged in order to enhance student’s creativity. The YAM contest was an idea that involved the students using their imagination to create something out of a simple yam. Each participating class was allowed to enter a yam with the winners receiving doughnuts for their class. Some of the entries were the Tribal Yam, Yam Snake, Yamatee, Yam Tree, Football Yam, Yamobile, Easter Yam, Yam Woman, and George Bush Yam.
Another contest that was established was the Sidewalk Chalk Day. This was arranged by the Art Club and there were twelve participants in all. Winners received a certificate of recognition for their achievements. Paula Freitag won first place for her Smurf drawing. Will Sonnett won second place for his Rocket- Ship drawing, and Katie Long won third place for her Patriotic Butterfly. The sidewalks were beautifully decorated, however, unfortunately, the rain came the next day and washed them all away.
So far, Rappahannock high school has enjoyed the activities that were prepared for Youth Art Month. The celebration at the school and nationwide, continues for the remainder of the month.
