The date was set for the first Sunday in April, at 2 a.m., when, according to Benjamin Franklin, most people are home and the fewest trains are running.

Franklin proposed this idea in Paris in 1784 as a follow-up to a demonstration of a new oil lamp, which produced much discussion regarding the amount of oil the lamp used in relation to the amount of light produced.

Thus, Franklin suggested that people begin waking up earlier, allowing minimal usage of the lamp
