rel (Glaucomys suLrinus) is widely distributed in coniferous forests in northern and western United States and Canada. The southern species (Glaucomys volans) occupies mainly hardwood forests in eastern United States and parts of Mexico and Central America. Their ranges overlap in mixed woodlands of the Appalachian Mountains and the Great Lakes regions.

The northern species is divided into 25 named subspecies, many found outside the typical range and most endangered. Two of these are the Virginia and the Carolina northern flying squirrels, both of which are found in the southern Appalachians. Some have been reported from a few counties in Virginia. These particular subspecies probably represent remnant populations left behind after retreat of glacial ice 11,000 years ago.
