to a vote to approve their new comprehensive plan, the result of a drafting process that took the bulk of the year. The new plan will control growth by concentrating on language that rigidly preserves the lines of the town’s original grid. The new comprehensive plan will also control growth through the town’s new sewer system, initial planning for which is still ongoing. The Washington Town Council also began the process of defining the town as a historic district in 2005. When the new historic district guidelines are adopted, Washington and it’s Architectural Review Board will have a clearly defined system for controlling alterations to Washington’s buildings. Despite this apparent resistance to change, 2005 was also the first year of “Christmas in Little Washington” which included a holiday parade and plenty of open houses. The town is still talking about this event which is planned for next year.
Rappahannock County Public Schools
2005 was a difficult year for Rappahannock school system construction projects. School Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell has faced unexpectedly rising construction costs, a leaky elementary school roof, and an expanding time frame as the county tries to keep school facilities in up-to-date condition. Funding projects like the proposed vinyl surfaced track has proved a challenge due to skyrocketing construction costs and high fuel prices.
