Looking forward
This weekend will mark the end of one year and the
beginning of another. It’s usually a contemplative
time for assessing the past year in terms of personal goals accomplished or not. Depending on the assessment, the next step usually involves plummeting into a depression or toasting yourself for successfully completing all that you wanted to do.
Whether you are basking in bliss or punishing yourself for procrastination, take heart that the sheer turning of a calendar page gives you another chance.
Nature is wonderful that way. As the seasons change from wintry to warm to windy and colorful throughout the year, our chances of redemption are constantly renewing.
With each day, with each week, with each month, we are given a daily new page to begin again - to start fresh, to tick off another task on our “to do” lists.
This past year has seen a host of natural disasters throughout the world and collectively the residents of Rappahannock County have rallied and helped in what ways they could. It seemed an impossible task and too overwhelming to tackle but put in perspective it was doable.
During the decision making process when one group was deciding whether to try and identify specific individual families or an organization, Rev. Jennings Hobson from Trinity Episcopal Church told the story of the starfish.
It may be familiar but worth repeating.
Two people were walking along a beach where thousands of starfish were washed up on the beach. One person leaned over and started to throw in one starfish at a time. The companion questioned what difference this effort would make when there were so many starfish. As the first person threw another starfish into the water, she said, “It makes a difference to THAT starfish.”
After hearing that story, the coalition decided to help four individual families.
Those families are very grateful and the help has , made a difference in their fives that might never have existed.
Let’s keep in mind as we head into another year, that it is often the process itself that is rewarding. For many of vis, that final product remains elusive. We’re always striving for something else that always seems just out of reach. •
While we’re reaching, it’s easy to overlook the fact that the quest itself is worthy. That in the process, we’re challenged to be the very best that we can be in every situation and that while we may not be able to solve the world’s problems, we can make a difference in the fives we do touch.
