ally mixed pragmatism with dogma, deciding to take advantage of, rather than fight against, public enthusiasm for the holiday. Among its actions was the designation of New Year’s to celebrate Jesus’ circumcision (ouch!). The church, under Pope Gregory XIII, also revised the Julian Calendar slightly to remove some inconsistencies with the solar year, skipping 10 days in October, 1582 altogether and introducing leap years.
The resulting Gregorian calendar has gradually become nearly universally recognized throughout the world.

Festive celebrations have always accompanied the New Year although some of the traditions are relatively new. In the 1700s, poet Robert Burns adapted an old Scottish poem to shape the day’s quintessential song, ‘Auld Lang Syne’. It was not until the bandleader Guy Lombardo started performing the tune at New Year’s during the 1930s however that “we’ll drink a cup of kindness” became a familiar refrain at every holiday gathering.
On New Year’s Day in the American South, a traditional dish called “Hoppin’ John” is often served. Made with black-eyed peas cooked with rice and pork, this combination is thought to have originated with African-Americans brought here as slaves. An old saying goes, “Eat peas on New
