women begin to nurse the man back to health. They discover his name is Andrea who doesn’t speak English. The sisters eventually determine that he is Polish and as the story unfolds, they learn that Andrea is a brilliant violinist.
Andrea’s presence is somewhat disturbing, causing the sisters to feel emotions so new they have no framework for them. Dench’s character, Ursula, in particular seems to be romantically drawn to the young man, though she recognizes that she is an old woman who has allowed herself to become infatuated. Smith’s character, Janet, seems more levelheaded about her feelings but is also fiercely protective of Andrea.
