The Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on June 5 to inform the public and begin discussion of the proposed 2007 draft county budget.
Several particulars of this first draft are expected to create public debate, including a proposed tax rate hike to create funds for the purchase of development rights from landowners, greatly increased benefit costs for county employees and the recent comity tax assessment are also likely to be points of interest in the $19 million budget.

Of particular concern to Rappahannock County tax payers is the projected rise in revenue from general property taxes, going from $8,499,300 to $10,699,650. This is a large increase, but according to McCarthy not unprecedented in Rappahannock County, although he did admit that it is probably the largest in the last decade. McCarthy said that the heightened taxes are partially the result of adjustments from last year’s budget.
