travel cost for the RCSO also covers the cost of officers traveling for additional training programs, many of which are related to the national emphasis on Homeland Security. In fact, the Sheriff’s Office funding has increased by over $140,000 for 2007.

The increase reflects the cost of a new road deputy for the RCSO, as well as a revision of their budgeting techniques. In past years, preliminary budgets for the RCSO have leaned toward the department’s requirements, and RCSO spending outside the budget had to be authorized by the Board of Supervisors at the end of the year.

For fiscal 2007, the RCSO budget more accurately reflects expected costs, so the apparent increase is deceptive, according to Rappahannock County government officials.
