Although a relatively conservative 2007 school budget passed by the supervisors last month encouraged some observers, school funding still required an additional four and one half cents be added to the county real estate tax rate.
“1 applaud what the schools did, but it’s absurd to say that it would let us cut the tax rate,” emphasized McCarthy.
The heightened taxes are also a result of the recent Rappahannock County real estate reassessment, which greatly raised the tax value of land in the county. The budget compensates for this rise by adjusting the real estate tax rate down.
The tax rate for Fiscal 2006 was $.76 per $100 of assessed value, with $.04 added in for the county Fire Levy.
For Fiscal 2007, this number has been adjusted down to $.56 to compensate for the higher assessed property values. With the $.04 Fire Levy and a proposed extra $.02 to support a Conservation Easement Service District, the proposed tax rate for fiscal 2007 is $.62.
