It’s interesting how space that seems homogeneous to us can be subdivided so precisely by these birds almost entirely by behavior.
Male sparrows know exactly where their territories are and those of their neighbors.
They know the boundary lines and the significant territorial markers, just as we know the boundaries with our neighbors.
Human territories are not nearly so transitory, though, and the boundary lines not nearly so blurred.
Sparrow territories must be established every year and contested everyday during the breeding season.
And there’s no telling who your neighbors are going to be from one year to the next. No male’s status is guaranteed.
These active and gregarious birds are so cute and fun to watch, we tend to forget how serious the breeding season is to them.
Singing establishes territorial rights, attracts mates and ultimately determines winners and losers in the annual game of love.
