Mount Vernon celebrates the 275th birthday of our first First Lady Friday, June 2 with “Martha Washington” greeting visitors to the estate. Mrs. Washington lived an incredibly full and vibrant life, and \yill share what life was like with George Washington. In recognition of her birthday, visitors named Martha or bom on June 2 will be admitted to Mount Vernon free-of-charge for the day.
Veteran interpreter Mary Wiseman presents a living biography of Mrs. Washington after portraying the First Lady at Colonial Williamsburg for more than a decade. Recently retired as Artistic Director for Character Interpretation and Manager of Women’s History at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Mrs. Wiseman has appeared at the White House Visitors Center, Constitution Hall, Washington’s Headquarters in Cambridge and Valley Forge, and has now brought her portrayal of Martha Washington ‘home’ to Mount Vernon.
