Indecision 2007
Looming over these concerns is the still undecided 2007 Virginia state budget. Recent events in the Virginia senate indicate that a state budget may soon be approved, but as of this writing no agreement has been reached. This means that the degree of state funding for various Rappahannock programs has not been finalized, complicating any county budget discussions.
If Virginia hats no budget by July 1, the effects of a state government shutdown would be felt even in Rappahannock. State supported services , the state police and Sheriff’s Office among them, would be without funding. According to County Administrator John McCarthy, Rappahannock County would have to assume at least some of the state’s funding responsibilities temporarily.
“If we have to front the state’s money, we might be in a cash crunch,” said McCarthy.
According to McCarthy, Virginia has never gone without a budget before, and there is no guide as to how much Virginia would reimburse local governments for taking up state slack in a government shutdown. /
If no state budget agreement has been reached by their June 5 meeting, the Supervisors’ budget discussions will be colored by preparations to get the county through a government shutdown, and fears about conserving funds through a possible state budget crisis this summer could influence Rappahannock’s budget for the entire year.
