With less than 698 units of 0+ available in the Region as of Wednesday afternoon (the desired level is 2043), as of now the American Red Cross is unable to adequately meet the demands of our hospitals and will face cancellation of elective surgeries if the blood inventory does not immediately improve. The situation is similar with other blood types including 0-, the most crucial and needed blood type as it can be transfused in any emergency situation where there is not time to blood type someone. Red Cross officials are urging the public to visit local blood drives.
Individuals ages 17 or older, and who weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health, may be eligible to donate blood.
