stayed close by all the time. Baby was totally laid-back, even taking little naps in the middle of the yard. When we approached they expressed only mild annoyance. There was always a faint skunky smell to remind us not to get too chummy.
Worldwide there are 11 species of skunks placed in four genera. In the county striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) are most common, but it’s also possible to see Eastern spotted skunks (Spilogale putorius) in the west. All are primitive carnivores linked taxonomically with the weasel family (Mustelidae).
Skunks are famous for their black and white warning coloration and most especially for their anal scent glands. Although carnivores of all types produce these glands, they are especially well-developed in the mustelids and are taken to extremes in skunks. Located at the base of the tail just inside the rectum, they contain a mixture of powerfully smelly sulfur compounds that can be sprayed or shot out with amazing accuracy toward attacking predators.
