Rappahannock County Elementary School failed to meet the national Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) scores for the 2006-2007 scoring period, reportedly due to poor performance on the new Virginia Standard of Learning (SOL) mathematics tests given to students for grades 4, 6, and 7.
The federal AYP testing began in 2002 following the “No Child Left Behind” Act.
The AYPs are primarily based on Virginia SOLs, although they take other assessments into consideration like the test results of various subgroups (Black, Hispanic, special needs, etc.), and attendance. Also, under AYP a high percentage of students must take each required test.
Often frustrating, a school can be fully accredited but not pass AYP as the requirements are stringent and numbers based.
“We haven’t released the figures yet, as we question whether the math test is a valid assessment, based on the scores that are lower than anything we could have anticipated,” said Rappahannock Elementary Principal Carol Johnson about the preliminary SOL results.
