membership entertained some opportunities to expand the church building, they never agreed to anything more than maintaining the building as it was. Reverend Campbell also believed that this was the best strategy, having himself received a vision that one day a much nicer opportunity would become available. This was a true exercise of faith being that there has been little useful land offered at reasonable prices in Rappahannock County throughout the years!
Finally, in 1991 Rev. Campbell’s vision became reality when Stewart and Betty Smith offered two acres of land for sale to the church.
Fellowship
Assembly of God
It was also in 1991 that the name of Sperryville Assembly of God was officially changed to the current name: Fellowship Assembly of God. During this same year the planning for the new church construction was started.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the new church building was held in early summer, 1992.
It was during the construction of the new church building that Rev. Campbell began experiencing serious health problems, including a chronic sinus infection, and several heart attacks. He had to face heart bypass surgery and the subsequent recovery before undergoing needed sinus surgery during the summer of 1993. The burden of the church work and the building project also weighed heavily upon him.
After recuperating from the sinus surgery, Reverend Campbell testified that he felt better than he had in years. At the conclusion of the Wednesday night Bible study on September 29, 1993, Reverend Campbell led the congregation in singing the chorus “The Move Is On.”
He encouraged the church to heed this song and to “move on” in the Lord. Tfiat night, while he peacefully slept, he indeed moved on to be with the Lord.
Joel Cress assumed the position of interim pastor. At this time, the church had no carpeting, porches, parking lot, sidewalks, trim, or paint.
