“While many students did not do as well on the new mathematics tests as we expected, especially in grades 6 and 7, I believe that the data from these assessments will be invaluable as we seek to support our teachers and raise student achievement,” wrote Cannaday. “The results of the new math tests remind us all of our initial experience in 1998, with our high-stakes accountability system. I am confident that the lessons learned then will help us again in supporting teachers and students.”
“We never heard reports from the task force,” said Johnson, who said that she felt blindsided with the AYP release.
New programs
Johnson said that in spite of possible discrepancies in the state tests, RCES has begun implementing programs to heighten math performance throughout the school.
Among the new practices, the elementary school will start research based math programs for students that might benefit from a different approach.
They are also working on an “in house” testing program to prepare them for subsequent testing. The school is also preparing to extend Math Resource periods to seven days a week, offering children further assistance in their math homework.
The state will also publish Electronic Practice Assessment Tools (ePat) for sixth- and seventh-graders to enhance their testing abilities. These tutorials help students become familiar with the format and structure of the questions, allowing them to receive feedback, tips, techniques, and strategies.
“The best thing for our staff to do is to analyze the data that we will receive from the testing results,” said Johnson. “That way, we can analyze individual students and take all groups into consideration. Once we find a pattern, we should be able to come up with the best solution for future testing.”
