home. They paid $7,000 for a little house on Willow Street in Luray. In 1961, they had their first child, Jeffrey Charles and just 13 months later their second son arrived, Steven Ibdd. Like many young couples from the country, they moved into the city for work. They lived in Fairfax County were my Dad worked and my Mom stayed home taking care of her children. In 1965,1 joined the family and shortly thereafter the family moved to Gainesville. Mom continued to be a stay-athome mom until I started school at which time she began driving a school bus so she could be off any day that we were at home. Eventually, the family moved back to my Dad’s home county of Rappahannock.
My mother had many good times, but she also had many heart aches during her lifetime. When my brother, Steve was just thirteen years old, he drowned in the Shenandoah River, over Easter weekend while camping. As you can imagine, this was probably the most difficult thing she and my Dad had to endure. Somehow, as a family, we got through it. Steve will always be remembered for his sweetness, silliness and sensitivity.
Tb help her with the sadness, Mom went back to school and graduated from musing school in 1979. She continued to drive the school bus during the week and worked as a nurse on weekends at a nursing home in Luray. I went to work with Mom and worked as a nursing assistant, which is where the seed was sown for my own future as a nurse.
Mom continued her self growth, eventually going back to school one more time to receive a license in cosmetology. She opened a little salon in her home where many of you here
