It hasn’t taken Connie Compton Smith very long to make waves as Rappahannock County’s new sheriff In one of her first acts as the county’s top officer, she chose to give the boot to the sheriff’s office’s second-in-command.
Smith said on Jan. 2 that Chris Williams, the office’s chief deputy since 1998, was not reappointed to his position.
“I never thought I would lose my job for no reason, but anyone who works for a constitutional officer faces the same unjust actions," Williams wrote in an e-mail to the Rappahannock News. “There are many traits that a good leader must possess, but the two most important things are heart and humility. I hope Connie someday finds them."
Williams did not remain unemployed for very long. On Monday, he started a new job as a road deputy for the patrol division of the Warren County Sheriff"s Office.
Smith and Williams had worked with each other at the sheriff’s office for nearly 20 years. Last year, they faced off in a three-person race for sheriff after former Sheriff Larry Sherertz announced he would retire without seeking a third term.
Smith won 43 percent of the vote on Nov. 6, while Williams garnered 34 percent and Culpeper Town Police Sgt. J.C. Welch finished third with 23 percent.
After the election was over, Welch congratulated Smith and wished her well in an interview with the Rappahannock News. Williams, however, did not respond to a request for an interview at that time.
