Sam Fox agrees. “The program provides wonderful help. If there’s an issue, I can talk to Carol, or if necessary they’ll call in another professional to talk it over with.”
“It can be challenging to be a mentor,” added Fox, “because there’s a tendency to want to be parental in one’s approach to the child, and that’s not where we ought to be. What CJ. needs me to be is a buddy, a friend, a confidante, and be non-judgmental.”
Asked what advice he would offer other children who might be thinking about having a mentor, CJ. Responded, “1 would say f they’re real cool to have, nice to talk to, it’| almost like they’re your best friend.”
