It* the best decision Ive ever made, said Jenkins. “Sam allow* him to be who he is. He’s gentle but firm. He lets him be a kid, but if he’s done something wrong, he’ll have no problem letting him know. If C.J. gets frustrated about something, if he’s got issues built up inside him, Sam can tell. CJ., who is now 11, agrees with his mother's assessment. “At first,” said CJ, ”1 didn’t know what Sam was going to be like, but then later on 1 saw how he was and he’s nice, real nice.”
C.J. enjoys the many activities he and Sam share during their weekly meetings. “We like to work in the workshop, and now we’re going in the gym to help me work out and get a lot stronger. Sam has a dog, *Gus,’—his real name is Angus. Gus likes to play with the Frisbee, and he loves to play tennis. If you throw the ball, he’ll try to catch it, then if it bounces he’ll go get it. Hell bring it to Sam and Sam will say: ‘sit,’ then ‘give.*”
“Our activities run a pretty broad gamut,” noted Fox. “I always try to make sure that if he has schoolwork, he does that first. He’s usually pretty conscientious about doing his work. He’s a very good student, he’s meticulous in his attention to the work. He has the most amazing handwriting or printing for a young boy! His papers are classic. He does well academically.”
