This is the time of year that should be called “hunker down.” We have been through the holidays.. .and I hope yours were wonderful.. .and now it is time for the weather to get cold and for the inhabitants to ride out the rest of the winter.

The eggnog was especially good this year. I have made three batches, so far. The fruit cakes were good, but, for some reason, were a bit too moist. My brother told me that Mom used to use an old wooden spoon to hold open a crack in the oven door when she was baking the fruitcakes, to let the moisture escape. I may have to try that next year.

We are finally getting some moisture in the ground, and a little more would be welcomed, in whatever form. The hunting season is over, and that went pretty well. I did hear of some miscreant scumbags who dumped a bunch of deer carcasses in the Jordan River, but nobody in their right mind would call trash like that hunters. Maybe we should offer a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of these scofflaws.

We have received the first couple of seed catalogs. I find it • rather enjoyable to sit by the wood stove and plan my vegetable garden. Until that far distant day when the garden starts to produce again, I think we will be able to make it on the canned beans and tomatoes we put up last summer.

And we have really enjoyed our crop of sweet potatoes. I set out nine plants, and they produced really well. I still recall how Mom used to take the little ones about as big as your finger and put them on a
