It’s been two years since the Rappahannock

Headwaters’ Starfish Mentoring
program each January, to help the Rappahannock community celebrate National Mentoring Month.
Two years ago, as Maryann Jenkins read the Rappahannock News series on Starfish, she began to realize it might be what she needed for her then 9-year-old son, Charles (“CAT).
“I read about it in the paper, and I said, *this sounds like what CJ. needs,’ remembered Jenkins. She had moved to Rappahannock County when CJ. was five, and was struggling with being a single mother. "I was looking for an answer but I didn’t know where to look. I wanted help but didn’t know where to go for it—I wanted someone to see him the same way I see, him."
Jenkins contacted Starfish Program Director Carol Lucking, and in August of 2006, C.J. was matched with Sam Fox, a retired attorney who moved to the county in 1988.
