Baker said that two people were flown bv medical helicopter to Fairfax’s Inova Hospital as a precaution. On Monday, Baker said, everyone had been released from the hospital.
Dr. Ron Bowman of Crest Hill Equine took time later to explain more about heart stoppage in a horse.
“It was known for years as the ‘Swale syndrome',” he said. Swale was the winner of the 1984 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Eight days after the Belmont, the colt dropped dead after exercise. There was no apparent, obvious reason for the horse's sudden death. Like Quick Line, Swale was fit. healthy, well cared for.
Bowman said it took dozens of veterinarians and hours of necropsy to determine that Swale had apparent tinv abnormalities in his heart muscle. “That probably caused the triggers of his heart muscle to fail to fire," all of a sudden, he explained.
