county taxes plummet
Non-payers to be prosecuted By Stephen Dareinc; Rappahannock News Staff Writer Economic malaise may have been seeping into the county much earlier than just last year. At Monday’s Board of Supervisors’ meeting, County Attorney Peter Luke asked the board to authorize him to prosecute a business that had not filed food and beverage tax returns for the last two years. Luke cited statistics from the Treasurer’s Office that what are commonly referred to as meals and lodging taxes have declined significantly from calendar year 2007 to 2008. But the Rappahannock News has learned that the biggest drop in meals and lodging tax collections occurred from 2006 to 2007 according to information supplied by-the Treasurer’s Office. It can be seen comparing 4th quarter 2006 to 4th quarter 2007 when there was a 35 percent drop in collections. According to officials at the Treasurer's Office, this is the largest collection quarter as it represents most of the busy fall season.
