Payne spends at least two hours after school each day helping students and frequently spends part of his Saturdays tutoring and providing extra help.
“He sets high standards for his students, encourages them to toil at the very edge of their limits, andlhen challenges them to reach beyond.” says AVID staff member Stacia Becker.
“He makes each student feel as though he or she is worthy, capable, and special.”
Becker adds that Payne has spent his own money to provide needy students with school supplies, food, clothing, help with college tuition, and fees for SAT and college applications.
“Mr. Pavne could be anything that he wanted or teach anywhere in the world, but he chooses to drive so far every single day with just the hope that he can help his students succeed,” says senior Anastasia Moschopoulos.
As director of the AVID program, Payne not onlyworks closely with students and supervises 34 staff members, he takes time to travel to other schools in the U.S. to teach AMD strategies and hosts visitors from other schools to Falls Church, now a national demonstration site school, an honor bestowed on the best AVID programs in the country.
