Thomas Layne Zumwalt
Thomas Layne Zumwalt, age 66. died Saturday, March 7, 2009, in San Antonio, Texas. A seventh-generation Texan, he was a former resident of Flint Hill and Washington, Va. He w'as elected treasurer of the Town of Washington in 1994 and served in that position for two years.
Tom graduated from the preparatory Jefferson College in Washington, Miss., in 1960, and from Auburn University in 1965 with a degree in architecture. He had a long and successful career in interior design, including embassy projects in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, South America and Central America.
Tom was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, having served as president of the William Barrett Travis Chapter in San Antonio. He also was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, St. Mark s Episcopal Church in San Antonio, and sen’ed on the board of directors of the San Antonio Botanical Society.
He was an extremely devoted son to this mother, Dorothy Maye White Zumwalt Pennine. Dorothy predeceased Tom in September 2008 at the age of 94.
Thomas Zumwalt is survived by his cousins, Linda Kay Gubbels and Janet Lee Enax of Rosenberg, Texas; his aunts, Arlene Davis and Mary Kathryn White of Fort Bend County, Texas; and by Dwight, Jennifer, Whitney and Dorian Matthews of Flint Hill.
A memorial service was held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, San Antonio, on March 13. Tom was interred near his family members in the Morton Cemetery at Richmond, Texas. * 1
