MOURNING PERIOD
While the word "bereavement” describes the inward pain and sense of loss that accompanies the death of a loved one, the word “mourning” applies to the socially or religiously defined period of time and set of activities that follow the death. The observance of the latter helps to ameliorate the former. That is, mourning events (funerals, visiting hours, and related customs of dress and behavior) help the bereaved cope with their grief. These practices differ widely between countries and ethnic groups to encompass everything from celebrations and feasts to periods of wailing. In this country, the observance of such mourning customs has declined steadily over the years. As a result, the bereaved are deprived of due recognition of grief.
