“Beware Greeks bearing gifts,” said Maxwell going on to say that why else “would that committee be formed” than to open the door to development in the county.
Alter public comment, the board briefly discussed the issue, then unanimously voted to create the committee.

As if it weren’t already a foregone conclusion given the vociferous objection to what some saw as “bailing” out Peter Kramer as opposed to a way to keep county government in the Town of Washington and save money, Jean Lollard rose to explain why even the assessment - which the supervisors agreed to have done after the public hearing on Feb. 12 - of the building was unacceptable given that comparable properties listed were in Warrenton.
The purchase price agreed to by the county and Kramer was $975,000. The county assessment was $658,000. However, the new assessment commissioned in the wake of the public hearing came back at $820,000 - not nearly the difference people had speculated.
