Hillsdale Store
A surprising revelation by County Attorney Peter Luke was that meals and lodging taxes for the county were down 23 percent. More surprising still was the requested authority from the board to prosecute Hillsdale Country Store - on US 211 near Massies Comer - for alleged failure to file food and beverage tax returns for the past two years. The board unanimously approved Luke’s request.
In a phone conversation with Bob Ghuman, owner of Hillsdale, with the Rappahannock News Monday evening, he confirmed that he had spoken to Luke.
“We know that we are late,” said Ghuman, “and we are not saying we don’t owe anything.” Ghuman said he would be talking with his attorney, Doug Baumgardner, and his accountant and would be resolving the issue. Frazier v. Chappell
The real fireworks were reserved for Dr. Chappell after he gave his report on county schools. Supervisor Ron Frazier began pressing Chappell on the number of “illegal” out of county students who haven’t paid tuition, to which Chappell responded that he didn’t have exact figures and would get back to the supervisors.
