Nearly 60 years ago, a political coup occurred right here in the backwaters of Rappahannock County when the Town of Washington elected a council consisting of seven women and no men.
This “takeover” originally began as kind of a joke, but took on a life of its own when dissatisfaction with lack of action by the existing council created a situation for a major change.
Female control of the council continued for nearly 25 years. On April 26 at 3 p.m., at the Washington Town Hall, the Rappahannock Historical Society will welcome Dorothy Cox Davis who served as the Mayor of Washington during many of those years. Mrs. Davis will talk about the circumstances surrounding the election that created what publications of the time called the “She Town.”
