With Independence Day this Saturday, organizers kicked into high gear this week, expecting a large crowd and beautiful weather
On Tuesday, they were putting up signs and mowing grass, working through the week for Rappahannock County’s annual Fourth of July celebration.
New to this year’s event. Blue Ridge Balloon will provide tethered hot air balloon rides between 6 and 8 p m. There will be a limited number of ndes available and tickets will be $10 per person.
Organizers also have added a raffle with a grand prize drawing of $2,500 to be given away late Saturday afternoon. The top ticket sellers will be crowned Mr. or Miss Fourth of July.
“The weather is going to be nice. It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day," said event organizer Richie Burke. “We’d like people to bring their families out and enjoy this event. Over the past years, there’s been about 3,500 people, but we expect possibly 5,000 people this year. We’re looking forward to it."
The event will take place at Thornton Hill Race Course at 4137 Sperryville Pike, just three miles south of Sperryville on Route 522.
Gates open at 1 p.m. and the celebration will last until the fireworks sound at dusk. Organizers say the fireworks will be a 35-minute show.
Besides the fireworks display costing over $8,000 to produce, there will be food, public safety demonstrations, antique cars, local non-profit displays, and activities for children.
There also will be music by the Gold Top County Ramblers, Bern Mason and Sops, and Bobby G & Friends.
