the maestro to the level of acclaim he’s reached today. Now, Maazel simply wants to give back. That’s what the Castleton Festival is all about.
“After having been given every privilege that a successful artist can be given, you want to pass on what you’ve learned in your life,” he said. “You like to see young people feel encouraged and be motivated to carry the torch, you like to feel that.”
The Castleton Festival, a product of the Maazels’ Chateauville Foundation, came to fruition after many years of planning. Its purpose is to nurture and mentor young, musicians, singers, instrumentalists, conductors, designers, stage directors, coaches and stage managers. It includes coaching and master classes, as well as workshops. The product is a series of performances over the two week span.
“My husband really wants to share a lifetime of experience as a conductor with young people,” said Dietlinde, who was bom in Germany and spent years working as an actress. “We just wanted to keep that aspect of mentorship in the festival.”
