Booster seats raise the child up and position the car’s seat belt so it falls across the strong shoulder, chest and hips, rather than the soft and vulnerable neck and stomach, which are easily crushed by the force of an accident. Age 8 is the minimum to stay in a booster under Virginia law, but safety groups recommend that children stay in at least a high-back booster seat until they can sit back against the back seat with their feet touching the floor.
