Carrigan, the town of Washington and the Rappahannock Association for Arts in the Community (RAAC). Carrigan owns Avon Hall in Washington, and decided 38 years ago that the town needed fireworks on the Fourth. He single-handedly bought them and opened his grounds to the public for picnicking, revelry and fireworks gazing. The town of Washington began supporting the event years later, turning the town into a carnival of activity on the Fourth.
About two miles down Harris Hollow in Washington, there is a private drive. Rush River Lane, where Meredith and Hank Gorfein share 32 acres with an assortment of stray cats, all spayed and neutered, a shaggy terrier, and three acres of grapes. At Rush River, Meredith and Hank planted two acres of cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon 10 years ago. Recently, an additional acre of Vidal and petite verdant was planted. One day, they hope the grapes will be their main source of income. But until then, Hank will take care of the grapes, and Meredith will continue working full time at Linden Vineyards. She is the democratic nominee for the Virginia House of Delegates, 31st District.
The Rappahannock county Board of Zoning Appeals had a relatively brief meeting for June. All members except for Chairman Alex Sharp were present. Also present was County Administrator John McCarthy. The board approved a special use permit for Nancy Dillon. Ms. Dillon wishes to convert a small portion of a garage on her property on Fodderstack Road into an efficiency apartment.
