Saturday, June 27 was Maazel’s last performance at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. He received a standing ovation before the first note was even played.
“I am so happy for him because people really showed him love as a performer,” Dietlinde said.
The couple returned to their 550-acre Castleton Farm estate this week, turning the page on one chapter in their lives, and starting another, here in Rappahannock.
The Maazels’ focus now shifts to their newest project, the Castleton Festival, which opens tomorrow and will run through July 19.
Maazel, bom in Paris to Jewish-American parents and raised in the United States, began playing the violin at age five and started taking conducting lessons at seven. A prodigy to say the least, he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic at age 12.
