Maazels created five-week residencies for young international music students on the property.
“We created those operas and we saw how successful it was and also the benefit it had for these young people of incredible, encouraging value,” said Dietlinde. “That was sort of the festival in the making.”
The Maazels also realized how well the festival’s surroundings inspired art.
“A lot of people have taken refuge here,” the maestro said. “They were charmed by the beauty of the county. Our festival, I think, will make it all the more satisfying to live here and to kind of have a spiritual outreach even if one has left an urban center.”
The Maazels have lived in Rappahannock for over 20 years, having moved here just after being married in 1986. They have two sons and a daughter together.
“Rappahannock has sort of a healing quality. When people come here, they feel something very special happening to them. You work creatively and this is the ideal place for creativity,” Dietlinde said.
