Bom Oct. 11. 1919, in Newburgh. N V . he attended Wake | Forest College in North Carolina where he graduated with a j B.S. Degree in Medical Science and also met his future wife. Helen Campfield. whom he married in 1946 He enlisted in the Navy in September 1942 and as an Ensign, participated in the Allied landings in North Africa. Anzio and Southern France during World War 11. serving as a naval gunfire liaison officer He was commissioned a Lt oJ(Ji on Dec 22, 1943. and was preparing for the invasion ot Japan with the Ath Marines when the war ended As part of the occupation forces in Japan, he was stationed at Yokosuka naval base and survived a C-46 plane crash
During and after the Korean War. he served as Damage Control Officer on the jeep carrier CSS Palau. CVE-122 He served at the Pentagon and worked on the deployment of the SOSCS underw ater listening system and later served as base commander of the SOSCS facility on San Salvador Island, Bahamas. His last duty was as Staff Commander at the Military Sea Transportation Service, Washington, D C
After retiring from the Navy in 1964. he joined the Civil Service as an electronic engineer in Electro Acoustics with the Naval Ship Systems Command Later, he was a General Engineer for Sonar Programs at the Naval Ship Engineering Center He retinal from the Civil Service in 1982 and moved to Castleton, VA. in 1994 He was a member of American Legion Post 217 in College Park, MD
He was preceded in death by his wife. Helen, in 2005 He is survived by a daughter, Donna Sylvester of Castleton, VA, a son, Jan Sylvester and his wife, Janet, of Delaplane, VA; three grandsons, TJ Sittner, Jim Sittner and Pvt 1st Class Neil Sittner, and his beloved dog. Bear.
Graveside services and interment will be at Culpeper National Cemetery at 11a m. Friday, July 10. 2009. A donation may be made in his memory to the USO, Fisher House for injured servicemen, or the Rappahannock .Animal Welfare League
