The Rappahannock County School Board pay out meeting on June 29 brought news of an operating surplus that could solve this year’s high school roof repair problem. At this special School Board session, Superintendent David Gangel reported that revenue receipts for the year exceedt>d expenditures by $366,836 and from a different perspective, expenditures lagged behind the approved appropriation by nearly $282,000. A major element of the revenue surplus was the $109,101 in state lottery funds, received in May of this year, and unappropriated in the fiscal 1998-1999 budget.
Gordon Thornhill helps his two sons run a farm at Round Hill Driving up to the bam, he points out the house where he was born. His daughter now lives there. Thornhill, a lifelong resident of Rappahannock County, is challenging Bob Anderson for the Stonewall-Hawthorne District seat on the county Board of Supervisors. When asked why he was running, Thornhill replied, “I feel as though it is time to give some of my experience as a business person and lifelong resident back to the county "
Despite the bone-melting heat this past Fourth of July weekend, Cootor’s, on Lee Highway in Sperryville, hosted thousands to their Grand Opening celebration. Ben Jones and his wife Alma Viator have apparently put together the right formula to attract out-of-town visitors to their modest “Dukes of Hazzard" museum and gift shop.
