Planetary
geologist
to speak

The Rappahannock Association for Arts and the Community iRAAO kicks off the season’s Second Friday at the Library Series on Sept. 11 at 8 pm. by welcoming Fauquier County resident, noted planetary geologist and author Ellen Stofan.
Dr. Stofan will draw from the book she recently wrote in tandem with astronaut Tom Jones which has been described by National Geographic as a “stunning and completely new view of the solar system.-’
In the February-March edition of Smithsonian’s Air and Space, Bob Craddock says, “1 can’t think of a better pair to write a book on our solar system’s planetology than astronaut Tom Jones and Dr. Ellen Stofan. Both Jones and Stofan, friends since meeting in graduate school, are scientists as well as modem day explorers. “In their recently published book, “Planetology: How Earth is Unlocking the Secrets of Other Worlds,” the authors use photos to illustrate the science. One example, which demonstrates the fury of the earth’s own geology, shows Stofan and her daughter standing next to a large rock expelled from Italy's Mount Etna when it erupted days before the photo was taken. Images like this make the book an engaging look at scientists at work"
The book, which will be available for purchase at the Sept. 11 presentation at Rappahannock County Library in Washington, includes a spectacular collection of planetary imagery from NASA, including orbital views from the Shuttle and the Space* Station.
The library series is free to the public.
