Eldon Farms Manager John Genho was not available for comment (he’s in Alaska fishing with his father and brothers) and several calls to Lane Industries in Northbrook were not returned.
However, Timbers, Woodard and County Administrator John McCarthy confirmed that Eldon Farms properties may soon be for sale.
“This is not the first brick washing away from the dike by any means,” said McCarthy, but an attempt to “strip down to something more efficient.”
Most of the properties on the farm are forested, he said, and much of it can’t be developed due to terrain.
There had been ideas floated about a few years ago to build a golf resort with “mini” estates on the properties but nothing materialized said McCarthy.
This time, the properties will be sold as two large parcels - one 200 acres, the other 1,800, according to McCarthy.
A worst case scenario would be that as many as 80 new houses could be built on 2,000 acres, said McCarthy. But much of the land on that farm is steep and in agricultural use with ponds that would almost certainly reduce the acreage that could be developed and that in all likelihood, should the parcels be sold, there would be far less development.
