A committee of citizens interested in the budget problem confronting Rappahannock county, met Monday morning at the Court House to formulate suggestions to be offered the Board of Supervisors and budget committee.

Meeting for the study were A. C. Latham, W. C. Campbell, Galley Smith, Mrs. E. M. Jones, Mrs. Elizabeth Buntin, Mrs. C. E. Johnson, Commonwealth Attorney R. V. Snead, Mrs. Snead, C. J. Miller, Wade H. Massie Jr., W. F. Moffett Jr., and B. M. Miller.

Facts and figuers presented, showed that the county deficits for the years 1948 and 1949 were approximately $14,000 and $11,000: revenue in 1948, $267,000; expenditures, $281,000; revenue in 1949, $280,000; expenditures, $294,000. This deficit stemmed apparently from th date of the remodeling of the Court House and jail, an expense of $42,000.

At present the real estate and personal property standing of the county is $4,300,000. Taxes in the districts are now set at $1.85, plus .15 for road tax in Hampton magisterial district, which goes out this year, and a .20 road tax in Piedmont magisterial district which may be reduced to .15 this year.

The county receives about 970,000J$80,000 annually, plus an addition of A.B.C. funds of about $25,0ft0-$30,000.

The citizens, studying the school budgets, noticed that the same number of teachers was required in the consolidated school as in the two high schools now existing. With a pupil enrollment of about 165 pupils, that would appear to be ten teachers with a 16.5 pupil-load.* The committee suggested asking Supt. Gasque if this could be arranged to be nearer a 25-pupil teacher-load, and thus cutting the numebr of teachers to seven, instead of ten, for the consolidated high school. With an annual salary of a teacher set at $1800-$3000, this should cut expenses from $5400-$9000.

Other suggestions 'were made and discussed. Few definite statements could he made. A genera! consensus seems to he that taxes must be raised and careful spending practiced, rhere is a possibility that taxes may have to lie increased as much as ten cents.
