Disease Appears
A not-yet-identified disease of oats showed up in Virginia Ia3t year—and the high-yieldng Bond derived oat varieties suffered along with the rest.
Premature ripening characterizes the new oat disorder. The first symptom is a reddening of the leaves. Later the leaves die and U-)Lome covered withj a growth of fungi or molds. Circular areas with an ashy appearance are found in fields in infected plants. The plants are stunted and the grain is light and chaffy.
Curtis Roane, plant pathologist for .the Experiment Station at VPI says the disease was present in several co-operative oat breeding nurseries, and official state yield test nurseries in Virginia, and that it “caused considerable concern about some of the most promising Varieties.”
